Check whether a permit-to-work procedure is in operation. If so, follow the procedure.
Make sure that your shield, helmet or goggles contain the correct filter lenses.
Wear appropriate protective clothing.
Wear clear, high impact goggles or face screen for chipping.
Where necessary, use screens to protect neighbouring workers and passers-by from the arc.
Ensure that cables and connections are in good condition and firmly attached.
Make certain that the welding equipment, bench or workpiece is properly earthed.
Check that the electrode holder is fully insulated and always place it on an earthed surface when not in use.
When the ground is damp, stand on an insulated mat.
Arrange good ventilation in the welding area, but do not use oxygen for this purpose.
Avoid welding near flammable materials.
Use fire blankets to cover flammable materials, floors, etc., where necessary.
Always ensure you have at least one dry powder fire extinguisher to hand, and that you know how to use it.
Never weld enclosed vessels, drums or tanks which have contained flammable materials unless they have been purged by steaming or boiling, or filled with inert gas, and tested and certified as safe to work on.
Do not weld inside enclosed vessels unless all precautions have been taken to ensure your safety - if in doubt consult your supervisor.
Keep trailing welding cables clear of roads and walkways - secure overhead wherever possible.
Do not weld material degreased with solvents unless it is absolutely dry.
Do not weld galvanised or coated material without taking proper precautions against fumes.
Beware of arc eye - protect your eyes.
If you have to weld in a trench, make sure the sides are properly supported before you go in.
Check for possible sources of fire before leaving the area, and after a further 30 minutes.
Report any defect in the equipment or the system of work without delay.
Gas Welding and Cutting
Check whether a permit-to-work procedure is in operation. If so, follow the procedure.
Oil and grease must not contact oxygen fittings.
Use goggles, face-shield or helmet with appropriate lenses.
Cylinders must always be secured to a trolley or cradle.
Open cylinder valves slowly, close valves when not in use.
Do not use gas cylinders as work supports.
Do not allow any source of heat to impinge upon the cylinders.
Do not cut or weld material degreased with solvents unless it is absolutely dry.
Do not cut or weld galvanised or coated materials without taking proper precautions against fumes.
Where necessary use screens to protect neighbouring workers and passers-by from the glare.
