No. 22 - Trainees and Young Persons

  • A construction site can be a dangerous place for the inexperienced and the unwary.
  • Complete a Young persons risk assessment and ensure the young person is briefed in the findings of the assessment.
  • The way you dress and the way you behave is vitally important to your safety.
  • Pay attention to your instructors/supervisors and they will teach you the safe way to work.
  • Dress tidily and safely. Close-fitting clothing with nothing flapping about, safety boots, hi-vis vest, gloves and hard hat are to be worn all the time you are at work.
  • Other PPE may be necessary for certain operations - your instructor/supervisor will advise you. Use PPE as instructed - do not adapt it or misuse it in any way.
  • Do not operate any equipment, powered hand tool or plant unless you have been trained and authorised to do so. You must be at least 18 years old to operate plant.
  • Do not remove guards from machinery - they are provided for your protection.
  • Use substances only in accordance with instructions received. If you have not been instructed, do not use them.
  • Horseplay on site is very dangerous and is not tolerated. Disciplinary action will be taken against offenders. Do not run!
  • Do not fool about with compressed air lines and do not use them to blow dust off of your clothing - very serious injuries could result.
  • Always use the recognised access ways around the site and never take short cuts.
  • Do not leave your place of work without permission, and do not go to other parts of the site unless specifically instructed to do so.
  • Work tidily and clean up as you go - it is far safer that way.
  • Use only the access equipment provided, and only as instructed - makeshifts make accidents.
  • If you should injure yourself get first-aid treatment at once. Even a small cut can be dangerous if neglected.
  • Familiarise yourself with the site fire and emergency procedures so that you know what to do in an emergency.
  • If you are in doubt about anything at all, please ask your instructor/supervisor.
  • We do not expect you to take chances.
