H&S September Focus - Lifting Operations

It has come to the attention of the H&S Department that some sites are failing to adhere to safe lifting practices on site, including aspects such as failing to have a slinger present during lifting operations and operatives who should not be deemed competent completing LOLER inspections for example.

Every lifting operation on site, whether that is via a crane, telehandler or excavator, must be properly planned and supervised by a competent person and carried out in a safe manner by trained and experienced operatives. The management of the Telehandler/Excavator lift plan, lifting equipment and accessories and the completion of LOLER/PUWER registers must also be supervised by competent indvidual's.

Lifting operations are a high risk activity and when executed incorrectly, a failed lifting operation can have severe consequences such as injuries and fatalities and therefore it is incredibly important to ensure sites are safe and compliant when completing them.

Therefore, during the month of September the H&S Department will be focusing on lifting operations on site during HSWI's, focusing on aspects such as;

  • Observing any lifting operations on site to ensure it is being carried out as per the lift plan.

  • Is the Telehandler/Excavator lift plan available on site and signed by relevant operatives?

  • Competency and training for operatives on site when completing any lifting operation, i.e. Excavator Operator with Lifting Ops and Slinger Signallers etc.

The site deemed to have the best overall management of lifting operations will receive a voucher! Good Luck!
