No. 01 – Site Performance & General Duties at Work
Presentation & Housekeeping
The site presentation is critical in ensuring a project is run efficiently and safely. The presentation of a project directly links to the image and reputation of Coinford, and success with securing future work.
All sites must ensure all areas of the project – Coinford office, stores & containers, works areas and materials compound are all kept in the best order possible. The better the standard of the presentation of the above areas will create a safe workplace and a good image of the business to our operatives, the client and any visitors to the project.
Ensure Coinford offices are kept clean and tidy at all times. A dirty and disorganised office will not promote a professional image. Keep the H&S notice board up to date of the latest bulletins/memos. Ensure the kitchen areas are maintained to a hygienic standard. Kept desks free from clutter and paperwork.
Safety alert February 2021 issue 7 sets out examples of Good practices which all sites must aim to or exceed. (attached below)
Maintain your PPE in good condition. Ensure your hi-vis vest is not damaged and cleaned regularly to maintain a professional appearance. Torn, ripped & worn clothing is not only a safety risk but presents poorly on ourselves. You are the face of Coinford, ensure you present clean, tidy and professional.
If the site has a boundary that is public facing, regularly go and view the site from the publics perspective. Check what the public will see? Is the site presenting well or can there be improvements made?
Some materials are branded i.e. Combisafe panels. Combisafe detail /presentation and repetition of same panels and layout should apply. In the event we are caught short with supply and blend are mixed with branded, then site management and contract managers are to agree on the best positioning of branded and intended installation pattern (alternate floors or complete elevations)
Material storage & costs
Containers must be kept in good order to allow any operative to safely gain access to everything inside without the risk of tripping or items falling onto them. Store the materials neatly so everything is visible, and nothing Is ‘lost and buried’ at the back of the shelves.
Material compounds must be maintained in good order to allow safe access and prevent damage and waste to materials. Ensure all materials can be accessed safely, without risk of tripping or materials toppling. Neatly stored materials will enable easy stock taking and prevent unwanted damage and waste occurring. Use pallet wrap to secure loose kerbs to a pallet to allow them to be stored safely. Stack items neatly and to prevent damage, material waste is very expensive.
Once works complete in an area, any offcuts, left over/unused materials must be collected and placed back into the compound to allow their reuse. Do not walk by an area where unused materials have been left, pick them up and return them to the correct storage area.
Prevent flammable substances from toppling over or spilling within the store. Keep containers upright and sealed. Prevent flammable liquids from spilling or escaping from their containers.
All materials have value, some more then you might expect. Ensure materials are not wasted and are used correctly. Do not use materials excessively, ensure the correct amount is used, for instance use the smallest excavator bucket to excavate a trench so to minimise the amount of shingle used.
For details on materials costs, refer to the material costs schedule. This schedule is to be displayed in the site office, site container, canteen. (attached below)
Workmanship
Take pride in all the work you complete. The work you complete will be a direct reflection of Coinford. Ensure the finish is to the best of your ability. Complete the work once to standard and prevent costly repeated visits back to correct defective or faulty works.
If in doubt – consult a site manager to ensure works are completed correctly first time, to specification and to the right finish. It is better to ask once, than install twice.
Rectifying poor workmanship costs considerably more than completing the works correctly first time. It reflects poorly on the individual who completed the works, and on the business as a whole when having to rectify poor workmanship. It adds time and cost to the project.
Plant, equipment & PPE
All plant must be treated with respect. Considerable investment is made each year to operate a modern plant fleet.
Plant operators must maintain the plant they operate in a safe condition reporting any faults to site management.
Utilise the correct piece of plant for the correct job. Can the excavator or roller be downsized to a smaller item? Regularly review the plant on site to see if it is still be utilised 100%.
Plant operators must keep the plant they operate clean – This includes the cab and controls. Respect the item of plant as if it was your own and treat it accordingly.
PPE is not a disposable item. Gloves can be worn for more than one day and can be washed in a washing machine when needed to prolong their use.
Ensure tools are treated with respect and returned to the tool store at the end of each shift. Do not leave tools lying around site ready for others to steal and add to their collection.
