  • When off-loading and stacking steel reinforcement, make sure the stacks are stable and placed to allow safe access between the bundles.
  • Always ensure that bearers are inserted to allow re-slinging. Do not re-use the pre-slung delivery strops after unloading.
  • When lifting by crane do not use tying steel around the bundle or lifting devices - use the take the chain right around the steel as per the lift assessment.
  • For large cages use purpose-made lifting beams. spray mark the lifting points on the cage.
  • Remove the delivery strops straight after use and dispose.
  • Allow enough room around your work area.
  • Before handling steel make sure you have the correct personal protection, i.e. boots, gloves, goggles (for cutting).
  • After tying, bend any protruding wire back into the cage.
  • Use tag lines where necessary.
  • When using cutting or burning gear, make sure you wear the correct eye protection.
  • Do not leave tying wire where it would cause a trip hazard.
  • Keep fingers and feet well clear when lowering cages.
  • Bar-benders and croppers must be used only by persons who have been trained and authorised to do so.
  • They must be used only as recommended by the manufacturers, with no attempt being made to exceed the stated maximum capacities.
  • The area around the machine must be maintained in a tidy condition, with off-cuts cleared away regularly.
  • Report any defect in the equipment or the system of work without delay.
