When off-loading and stacking steel reinforcement, make sure the stacks are stable and placed to allow safe access between the bundles.
Always ensure that bearers are inserted to allow re-slinging. Do not re-use the pre-slung delivery strops after unloading.
When lifting by crane do not use tying steel around the bundle or lifting devices - use the take the chain right around the steel as per the lift assessment.
For large cages use purpose-made lifting beams. spray mark the lifting points on the cage.
Remove the delivery strops straight after use and dispose.
Allow enough room around your work area.
Before handling steel make sure you have the correct personal protection, i.e. boots, gloves, goggles (for cutting).
After tying, bend any protruding wire back into the cage.
Use tag lines where necessary.
When using cutting or burning gear, make sure you wear the correct eye protection.
Do not leave tying wire where it would cause a trip hazard.
Keep fingers and feet well clear when lowering cages.
Bar-benders and croppers must be used only by persons who have been trained and authorised to do so.
They must be used only as recommended by the manufacturers, with no attempt being made to exceed the stated maximum capacities.
The area around the machine must be maintained in a tidy condition, with off-cuts cleared away regularly.
Report any defect in the equipment or the system of work without delay.
