No. 12 - Environmental Protection

  • Environmental matters are of great importance to us in our daily lives and we are committed to ensuring that their construction activities will not be harmful to the environment.
  • Do not discharge any chemicals or substances down drains or dump them anywhere on site. Check with your supervisor for the correct disposal procedures.
  • All chemicals, including solvents and paints must be stored only in the designated areas on site.
  • Dispose of empty cans and drums only in accordance with site procedures.

Describe the site procedures.

  • Where fuel, oil or chemicals are drawn from drums mounted on stillages, ensure that drip trays are provided and properly used.
  • Always decant liquids, using a funnel where necessary, into proper containers with sealable caps - never use buckets or open-topped containers.
  • When re-fuelling plant and vehicles take care to avoid spillages and overflows.
  • In the event of a spillage of oil or chemicals the aim should be to recover or contain as much as possible, before it seeps into the ground or enters the drainage system.
  • Ensure spill kits are available in the vicinity of stored chemicals and bowsers.
  • Repair any plant that has had a leak reported.
  • Dispose of all waste materials only in accordance with the site rules.
  • Do not light fires on site.
  • Store chemicals and fuel as far as practicable from water sources.
