  • A permit-to-work is a formal written means of making sure that potentially dangerous jobs are approached and carried out using appropriate safety procedures.
  • hot work (welding, cutting, grinding, etc.), entry into a confined spacespecified work on electrical equipment and Temporary works will all require Permits.
  • Check with your supervisor whether or not a permit-to-work is required for the work you have to do.
  • Make sure that the requirements of any permit that affects you have been explained to you.
  • Make sure you understand how they apply to your job.
  • When issued with a permit or when working under a permit, you should:
    • read it carefully
    • make sure you understand what action to take in an emergency
    • make sure you understand the limitations the permit places upon where you can work, what you can do and what equipment you can use
    • note for how long the permit is valid.
  • It must be clearly understood that the issue of a permit-to-work does not, by itself, make a job safe. This is achieved by the right application of the conditions specified on the permit.
  • If in doubt about anything at all, stop and ask.
